WILLIMANTIC, Conn. – The University of Southern Maine baseball team split a doubleheader with Eastern Connecticut State University Saturday. The Huskies won the first game 9-6 before dropping the second 8-7.
Freshman Geoff George hit 2 home runs and drove in 6 runs to lead the Huskies in the first game. Jon Collins led off the game with a home run for Southern Maine.
For the Warriors, Basilio Ortiz doubled and homered to knock in 2 runs.
In the second game, Ortiz homered again for the Warriors, a 3-run shot in the second inning. Trailing 7-6 in the seventh inning, a pair 2-out USM errors allowed the Warriors to tie the game at 7 on a wild pitch and an infield error allowed the winning run to score in the eighth.
Gary Williamson led the Huskies with a 3-run homer in the fifth inning and an RBI double. Chris Dutton added 3 singles for Southern Maine.
