James Milan, Nealey to vie for state title > Snowman, Fogg advance to women’s championship

James Milan and Russ Nealey advanced to the championship round of Maine Open Candlepin Bowling Association tourney over the weekend in action at the Colonial Lanes in Westbrook.

In the women’s competition, Betty Snowman and Sharon Fogg advanced to the championship round. Winners of the men’s and women’s tourneys are crowned state champs.

The state finals will be held at the Colonial Lanes on Saturday with the women bowling at noon and the men at 2 p.m.

Milan advanced by knocking off Chip Carson in Sunday’s 10-string semifinal round 1,245 to 1,236. Both bowlers are from the Bangor-Brewer Lanes.

Nealey, of the Oxford Hills Bowling Center in South Paris, defeated Al Nelson of Gardiner 1,285 to 1,274.

In Saturday’s quarterfinal round, Milan stopped Mark Smith of Auburn 1,221 to 1,175 while Nealey rolled past defending state champ Charlie Milan III (James’ father) 1,373 to 1,236. Carson advanced to the semifinals by beating Elmer Tibbetts of Westbrook 1,235 to 1,188 while Nelson defeated George Merrill of Westbrook 1,248 to 1,217.

In the women’s semifinal round on Sunday, Snowman of Oxford Hills stopped Sue Crawford of the BB Lanes 1,141 to 1,090, while Fogg defeated Marti Damon 1,169 to 1,137. Fogg and Damon bowl out of Oxford Hills.

Snowman advanced to the semifinal by defeating Becky King of the BB Lanes 1,136 to 1,116, while Fogg beat Judy Berry of Vacationland Lanes in Saco 1,194 to 1,100.

Damon advanced on Saturday when she set a Colonial Lanes women’s record with a 1,289 total, which beat Paula Truman’s 1,157. Crawford advanced by knocking off defending state champ Val Joy of Oxford Hills 1,211 to 1,179. – – –

State junior championship competition was also held over the weekend at the BB Lanes in Brewer with boys and girls competing in four age divisions in teams, mixed teams, doubles, and mixed doubles events.
