Raymond Alley, after only one season of play, has become the youngest Husson College basketball player ever to be named honorable mention All-American by the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics.
The 5-foot-10 Vinalhaven native scored 697 points for the Braves this past season, making him the fourth-highest single-season scorer in Husson history. Alley is already the state’s high school scoring record holder with more than 2,300 points.
Alley averaged 22.5 points as a freshman for Husson with a high of 37 against St. Joseph’s College. He hit a season high 14 of 26 field-goal attempts against UM-Farmington and his season high free throw production was a 13-for-16 night against UM-Presque Isle.
Braves coach Bruce MacGregor calls Alley “a natural talent,” but with room for improvement. MacGregor said he is looking for “more consistency” from Alley next season.
“He made great strides defensively last season and improved his shot selection,” said the Husson coach. “We’re looking for good play on a more consistent basis.”
Alley, who transferred to Husson after first attending the University of Maine for a semester, stressed team goals for next season.
“I want to work on passing the ball more and better and working on my jumping,” said Alley. “I’ll be more of a point guard instead of a shooting guard.
“Teams will be expecting me to shoot, but I’ll be passing off more to people who are open,” Alley summarized. – – –
