Conservation district to elect new chairman

MACHIAS — The newly reconstituted five-member Board of Supervisors for the Washington County Soil and Water Conservation District will elect a new chairman at the district’s May meeting, according to Nathan Pennell, district manager and superintendent for the recent district elections.

One supervisor was recently appointed by state Soil and Water Conservation Commission officials, and three other supervisors were elected to the Board of Supervisors in April. The board includes two state-appointed supervisors and three supervisors elected at the county level.

Pennell said Friday that the Maine Soil and Water Conservation Commission in Augusta has appointed Nancy Bennett of Machias to the position of supervisor for the Washington County Soil and Water Conservation District. The commissioners complimented Bennett for her demonstrated interest and volunteer work with the district.

“Nancy is interested in contributing her time and energies to seeing sustainable agriculture in the county that is environmentally sound and economically viable,” Pennell said. “She is interested in working with students to involve them in hands-on projects such as water-quality monitoring and other Youth Conservation Corps Activities.”

Bennett said, “This county is facing some important issues regarding its resources. I would like to be involved in the process.”

The district manager welcomed Bennett “as supervisor to help establish policies and carry out the important job of conservation in Washington County.”

The other state-appointed member on the Board of Supervisors is Roger Ritter of Indian Township, near Princeton.

Superintendent of the recently completed elections, Pennell announced the elections of supervisors to include Sanford Kelley Jr. and Arnold Pearlman, both of Jonesport, and Donna Sauter of Steuben. The elections were conducted by mail.

Kelley, a Jonesport native, was elected to a three-year term. He has been a blueberry grower since 1960, when he began managing the Kelley family’s field crops that now include about 40 acres in berry production.

He serves on the board of directors of Pleasant River Canning Corp. and the Maine Blueberry Advisory Committee. He served in the U.S. Army before his graduation as valedictorian of his college class in Waterville. He also graduated magna cum laude from the University of Maine, where he studied chemical engineering. He worked for Pratt & Whitney Aircraft Corp. in the United Technologies division for 26 years and has been a consultant on efforts to improve fuel economy in airplanes.

Pearlman, a graduate of the University of Maryland, was elected to a two-year term as supervisor. He and his family own Crossroad Organic Farm in Jonesport, where more than 10 acres of vegetables and other crops are grown. The Pearlmans compost fish wastes and other materials for fertilizers.

Donna Sauter of Steuben was elected to a one-year term on the supervisory board. She and her family operate the small diversified Rusty Brook Farm in Steuben.

A veteran farmer, she has previously served as an associate supervisor and volunteer for the conservation district. She has assisted the Down East Agriculture Viability Program and facilitated the district’s shrub and fruit tree program.

Pennell said the day and time for the supervisors’ organizational meeting in May would be announced.
