OLD TOWN – Things like this are expected from Jamie White. But, Jeff Fogg and Allen Perkins?

Brewer High School showed its depth on the diamond as Fogg went 3-for-4 with 4 RBIs and Perkins hurled a no-hitter through four innings to lead Coach Rich Kimball’s Witches to a 12-2 victory over the Old Town Indians in schoolboy baseball action Friday afternoon.

While White, Brewer’s versatile athlete, roped three hits in five at bats for two runs scored, two stolen bases, and one RBI, it was the lesser-known Witches who carried the team to the easy win.

Perkins, a senior righthander, scattered 3 hits (all in the fifth inning) while striking out 6 and walking 2 to earn his first win of the season. And, Fogg, Perkins’ junior batterymate, had a double, 2 singles and 2 runs scored to go along with his 4 RBIs.

“We had a feeling that, today, that bats were going to come alive,” said Kimball. “We look at our line up and from the (No.) 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 guys, we’ve got guys that are capable of hitting the ball out of the park and for average. And, we’ve got a little depth with our pitching.”

Both showed on Friday for Brewer, now 1-1.

It was Fogg’s bases-loaded double, from seventh in the order, in the third inning which blew the game open.

After Brewer took a 2-0 lead on an RBI double by White and a single by Fogg, the Witches went down in order in the second.

But in the third, White started things with a single and, after Billy Swift was fanned by OT starter Aaron King, Ryan Soucy and Scott Moorhead both walked to load the bases.

Fogg then roped a line drive to the fence in left field, cleaning the bases and opening up a 5-0 lead. Perkins, the next batter, then helped himself out by doubling home Fogg to make it 6-0.

Two innings later, the Witches added 6 more runs (two knocked in on a Soucy single which deflected off the second-base bag) to give Perkins a 12-0 lead entering the bottom of the fifth.

Up to that point, Perkins was cruising.

Taking the no-hitter into the fifth, however, Perkins gave up back-to-back singles to leadoff hitter Jay Blackwell and Paul Bosse. A passed ball then moved the runners up to second and third.

A groundout to second by Keith Feero plated Blackwell to end the shutout and a single by Humphrey scored the second run.

“He had to bear down a little bit and concentrate (entering the fifth),” Kimball said. “I went out and talked to him and he said he felt great. He just had to pitch like it was a 1-0 game instead of a 12-0 game. That’s hard to do for anybody, even on a professional level. And to ask an 18-year-old to do it….”

Cutting the lead to 10 was as close as the Indians would get, however. After leaving the bases loaded in the sixth inning, when Perkins struck out the last two batters of the inning, the Indians went down in order in the seventh to drop to 0-2.

“They’re a good club,” said Old Town second-year coach Dave Paul. “They’re going to have days where they’re going to get those 10, 12, 14 hits. Today was one of those days. We got beat.”
