PORTLAND – The University of Southern Maine baseball team closed their regular season with a doubleheader sweep of Bridgewater State College of Bridgewater, Mass., 4-3 and 8-2 Sunday.

In the first game, the Huskies rallied to score 3 runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to win. Geoff George scored the winning run from third on an error. Scott Dutton, Gary Williamson and Pete Misiaszek all knocked in runs in the inning.

Bob Prince singled three times for the 31-5 Huskies. Pitcher Troy Brown improved his record to 5-0, striking out 7 batters and allowing only 2 earned runs in a complete game performance.

For the Bears of Bridgewater State, now 24-9, Ed Grueter singled twice and doubled and Bob Goonan hit an RBI double in the fifth inning.

Rick York led the Huskies in the second game with a 3-run homer in the third inning and an RBI single in the fifth. Dutton added a 2-run double in the 6-run third. Steve Claire singled twice and knocked in a run and starter Marty Devlin improved to 7-1 with a win in 5 innings of work.

Jay Doherty singled three times and knocked in a run for Bridgewater State.
