Big weekend for local athletes

Athletes of all ages, from the collegiate to recreational level, who compete indoors and out during the spring, are traveling this weekend for postseason competition.

Members of the University of Maine women’s track team will be in Fairfax, Va., for the Eastern College Athletic Conference championships, and members of the YMCA gymnastics league will be in Keene, N.H., for the YMCA Regional Championships.

Maine’s representatives in the ECACs at George Mason University will be senior Carole Beale and freshman Christine Berube.

Beale, a brand-new Maine alum, will probably be seeded seventh or eighth in the heptathlon after finishing third in the New England Division I championship last weekend with 4,327 points.

She acquired those points with a personal-best 16.30 in the 100-meter hurdles; a 5-foot, 3 3/4-inch high jump; a 28-foot shot put; another personal-best 27.51 clocking in the 200 meters; a long jump of 15 feet, 4 inches; a 112-foot throw in the javelin; and a 2:22 run in the 800 meters.

Beale had a 5-foot, 6-inch jump in the open high jump, which would have been the winning one had she not recorded one more miss than her competitors. As a result, she finished third in that event. She did, however, score all 12 of Maine’s points in the New England championship.

At the prestigious Penn Relays earlier this spring, in which she was the first Black Bear invited to compete in the heptathlon, Beale finished 10th. She also had a strong outing in the North Atlantic Conference championship.

Berube qualified for the ECACs earlier in the year with a discus throw of 130 feet, 6 1/2 inches.

On the heels of recent state championship team performances in the YMCA gymnastics league, several area girls will be competing this weekend for individual regional titles.

Eleven members of Mike Norkum’s Old Town-Orono team will enter the all-around competition. Shannon Gallant will represent her team in Level 7 competition with Joanna Cronkite, Jodi Nadeau, Michele Thornton, Kate Thornton, and Jessica Stoup competing in Level 5.

Old Town-Orono’s Level 4 competitors will be Courtney Madden, Jessica Alex, Duska Sturrup, Carrie Belknap and Danielle Sullivan.

Making a first-ever appearance in a regional competition in its first year of YMCA competition will be David and Carol Evans’ team from the Piscataquis YMCA in Dover-Foxcroft.

Competing in Level 5 will be Sarah Bray and Jayme Iannetta, with Poppy Minder and Maida Rollins entered in the Level 4 competition.

The Bangor YMCA team, coached by Jeanie Carver, will send Brooke Hayes, Kristen Johnston and Beth Pancoe to the Level 6 regional competition, and Logan Svoboda and Maria-Alexis Karris to the Level 4 competition.

The top 20 gymnasts from this meet are invited to compete in either the regional optionals in Newport, R.I., or the national YMCA championship in San Diego, Calif.
