Vaughan’s 2-hitter lifts MCI past Messalonskee

PITTSFIELD – Becky Vaughan pitched a two-hitter and Emily Walker drove in five runs to power Maine Central Institute of Pittsfield to an 8-2 schoolgirl softball victory over previously unbeaten Messalonskee of Oakland here Monday.

Vaughan, who struck out seven and walked five, was backed by a 13-hit attack. Walker went 4-for-4 with a double and three singles. Kari Wentland and Cory Monday rapped two hits each for the 6-5 Huskies.

Nancy Kitchin and Jill Downing singled for the 13-1 Eagles behind loser Kelly Pinney.

Mount View 11, Medomak 10

At Waldoboro, Jenny Buffington slugged an RBI double then scored the winning run from third base on a bases-loaded walk, sparking Mount View of Thorndike to the eighth-inning win over Medomak Valley.

Julie Buffington led Mount View (5-6) with a double and two singles. Missy McKenney added three singles and Heidi Adams had two singles. Robin McCormick went the distance for the pitching win.

For Medomak, 5-8, Tina Brochu had three singles. Laurie Wentworth doubled and singled, while Liz Boyer and Terry Littlefield had two singles each.

Sumner 7, Searsport 2

At East Sullivan, Darci Lane scattered five hits to help live the Tigers to their 11th win against one loss.

Mindy Tracey backed Lane with a two-run homer. Holly Newenham chipped in with a triple and Angela Bagley singled twice.

Searsport is now 6-8.

At Dover-Foxcroft, Keri Cook scattered seven hits and Karen Hersey slapped three singles for three RBI to lead the Tigers past the Ponies.

Nicci Lobdell and Tammi Page each chipped in with two singles for the winners, now 6-6.

Lisa Sockabasin and Chrissy Packard had two singles apiece for Foxcroft, now 5-9. Sockabasin also had an RBI.

Bucksport 18, Ellsworth 1

At Bucksport, Jen Warwell five-hit the Eagles while striking out nine and not walking a batter to lead the Golden Bucks to their 12th win without a loss.

Tracy Huggins backed Wardwell with a 5-for-5 effort which included six RBIs with three singles, a double and a triple. Jen Marzof added two singles, a triple and two RBI and Tammi Gross had a RBI single and triple. Marci Smith and Corinne Keene each singled twice with Keene driving in two runs.

Lisa Hodgdon singled and tripled for 4-6 Ellsworth and Julie Coffin singled twice.

At the beginning of the game, the two teams decided to waive the 12-run rule.

At Newport, Dawn Libby hurled a 2-hitter in a complete game of work to lead the Rams past the Warriors.

Tina Keeling singled twice and Libby doubled for the 8-5 Rams.

For the Warriors, 5-6, Candy Boone and Jen Cyr both singled.

At Orono, Jessica Phelps hit a 3-run home run in the third inning as Mount Desert Island defeated the Red Riots.

Sara McFarland added a solo homer in the sixth inning and singled for the 5-7 Trojans.

For Orono, now 7-5, Darcy Umel singled twice.

At Hampden, Michelle Thomas singled twice as the Witches defeated the Broncos.

Tammy McLaughlin added a triple for 2-10 Brewer. The Witches capitalized on 12 Hampden errors.

For the Broncos, 5-7, Jen Craig doubled and Shellie Arbuckle singled.

At the Husson College field in Bangor, George Stevens Academy of Blue Hill scored nine runs in the third and went on to win, upping their record to 9-3.

Katye Mattson led the Eagles with a two-run homer and a pair of singles. Susie Witt had two singles.

For the 3-9 Crusaders of Bangor, Valerie Higgins singled twice.
