MILO — The Milo Free Public Library is sponsoring the annual summer reading program titled “Tall Tales.”

According to Judith Macdougall, program sponsor, registration will be held the week of June 10. She said it was not necessary to sign up in advance, but those who do so help the staff to know approximately the amount of materials needed for the program.

The program will begin Monday, June 17, and will run for eight weeks. Macdougall said that in keeping with the “Tall Tales,” there would be a section of books about tall tales and American folklore. There will be other kinds of books as well. She said reading would include the latest from Judy Blume, Beverly Cleary and other popular authors for youths.

There are categories in the program for readers and non-readers. The non-readers participate by listening to stories read to them.

Macdougall said there would be weekly paper-and-pencil games, giveaways, and prizes for certificates for free pizza and ice cream, sponsored by local merchants. A party will be held at the completion of the program. She said there would be prizes for writing stories and drawing.

This year, there are no prizes for the most books read. Macdougall said a contract is used and children are encouraged to set their own goals. “This way, the slower reader can complete his or her contract as well as the faster reader.” Macdougall said.

Information about the program is available from Macdougall at 943-233, her home, or the library at 943-2612.

Summer library hours for the library are from 2 to 5 and 6 to 8 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
