TRENTON – It was good to see Madolin Fogarty of Rockland at the Women’s Maine State Golf Association Metropolitan Tournament hosted by Bar Harbor Golf Course here Monday and Tuesday.
Not only did Fogarty bring her clubs and a good swing to the course, but she remembered to bring the results of the Tri-State Golf Tournament in which members of the WMSGA competed last week.
The Vermont Women’s State Golf Association successfully defended its title at the tournament, hosted by the New Hampshire Women’s State Golf Association at Eastman Golf Links in Grantham.
For the second consecutive year, Vermont was the winner with Maine the runnerup and New Hampshire finishing third.
Vemont’s winning total was 77 1/2. Maine was a close second at 75, while New Hampshire ended up at 63 1/2.
The event is scored following the 3-point Nassau match-play system. Golfers earn points based on their performances against each of the other players in the threesome. The most points a player can earn is six, with one point earned for beating each player on the back nine, on the front nine, and overall.
The history of the Tri-State tournament has been more interesting of late, especially for members of the WMSGA.
Maine last won the title in 1989 at Fogarty’s home club in Rockland. The WMSGA also took the title in 1985, but prior to the ’89 win, had not won a tournament it had hosted since 1979.
Vermont has bragging rights over Maine in back-to-back championships, however, since the WMSGA hasn’t won consecutive titles since 1960.
It is interesting to note New Hampshire has not fared as well lately as it had in the past. The last time New Hampshire took the title was in 1988, its 19th win in 36 tournaments. New Hampshire has finished third the last three years.
Competing for the WMSGA were Fogarty, Blanca Wales-Pickering, Sheila Witham, Betty Farrand, Jean Young, Sharon Dauphinee, Dorina Martin, Becky Gamage, Kitt Bartlett, Bobbie Andrus, Ann Lang, Sandy Bourgoin, Donna Moutsatsos, Cindy Choate, Lisa Jensen and Julie Green.
Also representing Maine were were Munsie McFarland, Donni Witham, Betty Beem, Shirley Remers, Evelyn Wing, Anna Sorrent, Debbie Ricco, and Alma Boutte.
Participating as alternates, but not scored, were Betsy Frohlick, Viola Webb, Joan McClay, Sara Guiffreda, Barb Lawrence and Charlotte Connelly.
With six being the maximum number of points a player can receive, only Beem and Remers earned that amount. Choate scored the only 5 1/2 for Maine; Young, Martin, and Boutte had five each while Sheila Witham, Dauphinee, and Riccio each scored 4 1/2 points.
Maine hosts the 40th tournament next summer at a site yet to be determined.
