ORONO — The Parker Dining Room has opened at the C. Mather Parker Building, and meals will be served to the elderly at noon on Monday, Tuesday, Friday and Saturday.
Those organizations that have helped fund the operation are the Maine State Housing Authority, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and Eastern Area Agency on Aging.
The Housing Foundation organized the project and donated a kitchen. The Town Council and Senior Citizens of Orono provided the building.
Jacquelyn Wagner, executive director of the Housing Foundation, said that for years, funding problems hampered efforts to create a meal site. But support from senior citizens and the town helped the project.
Contracted to provide meals was Eastern Maine Medical Center.
Information is available by calling 866-7944 before 8 a.m. the day of the meal.
