Residents want data on marina

STOCKTON SPRINGS — A marina proposed by the Belfast Investment Co. was discussed at a special meeting of the Planning Board and Harbor Committee on Wednesday, June 26, at Municipal Hall.

Many residents complained that they have no knowledge on the proposed development.

Former Zoning Board of Appeals member John Thornton said the meeting was basically exploratory. Several problems remain to be solved to protect town residents from any investment. Townspeople don’t want to invest town money in the marina.

With the possibility that the town pier site might be restored, the BIC marina plans might have to be moved 75 to 100 feet south, Thornton said.

Andrew Urquhart of the Bangor Investment Co. said investors are “willing to consider all sections of a problem and they surely want a satisfied community in which to do business.”

Town officials have indicated objections to any investment of tax dollars in the project. Urquhart suggested that the town examine available grants. BIC officials would consider matching any development funds raised by the town.

Preliminary BIC plans include a boat repair building with launching and hauling areas.

Some Camden mariners have expressed interest in moving to the Stockton Springs harbor, officials said.

Town resident Howard Gray asked to get a proposal in black and white. “I suggest that BIC be asked to provide the town with a signed statement detailing what they will give to the town and what they expect from the town.”
