CALAIS – Calais tripled its win production for the season here Sunday while sweeping a doubleheader from Penquis in Zone 1 American Legion baseball action.

The hosts won the opener 7-6 and posted a 25-4 victory in the nightcap.

Peter Mercier hit a 2-run single in the third inning which proved to be the game winning hit in the 1-run victory. Mercier singled twice and knocked in 3-runs for 3-11 Calais and Jason Parks doubled. Travis Oaks and Bud Sprowl both singled.

For 5-9 Penquis, Chad Graffam hit a solo homer in the first inning and Travis McKenney doubled.

In the second game, Derek Feeney hit a 2-run homer in the third inning, a 3-run shot in the fourth, doubled twice and knocked in a total of 8 runs as Calais blasted past the Travelers with 20 hits, including 5 home runs. Matt Cassidy also had 2 home runs, a 2-run shot in the third and a solo homer which followed Feeney’s in the fourth. Noah Tapley hit a solo home run in the fifth inning and singled twice. Tapley went the distance on the mound, allowing only 7 hits, in his first decision of the season.

Travis McKenney hit a 2-run home run in the sixth inning and Brook Carleton hit a solo homer in the third for Penquis. Argo Regan added a single and a double for the Travelers.

Skowhegan wins two

At Skowhegan on Saturday, Mark Hreben hurled a 3-hitter as the league-leading Log Drivers topped Calais 9-2 in the first game of a doubleheader. Hreben also hit a 2-run double in the bottom of the sixth inning of the second game for the eventual game-winning RBI as Skowhegan completed the sweep 7-5.

In the first game, Eric Nichols singled and tripled for the 11-1 Log Drivers and Ken Reed and Adam Fitzpatrick added 2 singles each.

For Calais, Bud Sprowl hit a solo homer in the second inning. Paul Napoleoni added a double and Chris Sherrard singled.

Doug Lacroix led Skowhegan in the second game with a 2-run home run in the third inning and a single. Reed and Mike Savage added 2 singles apiece.

Ray Fox and Matt Cassidy had 3 singles each for Calais.

At Guilford, righthander Paul Farley fired a one-hitter in the nightcap, striking out eight and walking two, and the Acadians scored nine first-inning runs to salvage a split of their Saturday doubleheader.

Mike Clark and Steve Smith each doubled and singled and drove in a run for the 5-6 winners and Brian Willey had a pair of base hits and an RBI.

Chad Graffam’s RBI single in the first inning was the only hit for the 5-7 Travelers.

In the opener, an infield throwing error on a rundown play with nobody out in the bottom of the seventh gave Penquis its come-from-behind victory. Toby Pineo had singled and stolen second and third to open the inning before Mario DeIeso walked and stole second. The throwing error was made on Chad Graffam’s grounder as DeIeso tried to scamper back to second after running to third, where Pineo had stayed put.

Pineo had three hits for the winners, DeIeso had a solo homer and a single, Carl Cobb had a three-run double and Travis McKenney had an RBI double.

Mark Leighton had a homer and two singles for Ellsworth-Trenton and Eric Lanks had a pair of singles and three RBIs.
