Varney leads Hilltop past Downeast

ORONO – Troy Varney’s single and a two-base throwing error scored Chris Johnson with the winning run in the ninth inning as Hilltop upset the Downeast Yankees 5-3 in Eastern Maine Amateur Baseball League action here at Mahaney Diamond Friday evening.

For 2-15 Hilltop, Jeff Davis’ single scored Varney with an insurance run. Varney was 4-for-4 with 4 singles and an RBI. Davis had 2 singles, a double and 3 RBIs, and Bill Milliken singled twice. Matt Brown struck out 5 hitters in three innings of relief and notched the win.

For 9-9 Downeast, Mark Horne had 3 singles and 2 RBIs, Bain Pollard had 3 singles and 1 RBI, and Sedge Saunders hit 3 singles.
