PLYMOUTH — A Maine Army National Guard unit in Bangor has found the ideal way to introduce and involve their families in their military careers. Members of the 262nd Engineer Battalion’s Headquarters Company and their families camped out at a training area here Saturday night.

Capt. Michael Orlowski of Millinocket, the company commander, described the activity as a chance for families to experience the type of training their spouses, fathers or mothers go through while on duty with the Guard.

During the day, soldiers practiced nuclear, biological, and chemical warfare defenses, first aid and land navigation. The training routine was followed from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., but families were watching during the afternoon after arriving by bus from Bangor.

Company 1st Sgt. George Copeland of Brewer said the first overnight, held in October 1989, had been a success, although temperatures were on the cold side.

Based on that experience, the company planned a summer event for 1991. Guard officers estimated that 60 family members would attend. However, officials discovered that more than 100 took part in the family camping event.

Food was provided through the Bangor Armory Family Program and an evening meal was followed by a bonfire and games.

Accommodations varied from family tents to a big tent for the ladies. Many of the boys slept at their fathers’ section bivouac sites. Breakfast was prepared for members and families before they left the training area.
