Skowhegan’s Quinn is AL tourney MVP

Commentary

TOGUS – He acknowledged that it was a nice honor, but Skowhegan American Legion relief ace-first baseman Garrett Quinn put his State American Legion Tournament Most Valuable Player Award into perspective.

“I was happy to get something like that but I’d have much rather won the state championship,” said Quinn.

Quinn pitched in all six Skowhegan games and went 0-1 with 4 saves and a sparkling 1.32 earned run average. He pitched 13 2/3 innings and allowed 10 hits and three runs, two earned. He struck out eight and walked three. Quinn was the loser in the final but allowed just two runs (one earned) over 3 2/3 innings after making two appearances on Tuesday.

Offensively, the 16-year-old Quinn hit .391 (9-for-23) with a homer, 6 runs batted in and 6 runs scored.

“He deserved it,” said Biddeford catcher John St. Onge, another candidate. “He’s a great player.”

Quinn was also chosen to the All-Tournament team as the first baseman.

He was joined on the team by teammates catcher Ken Reed III (.370, 5 RBIs) LF Jerrod Thebarge (.217, 3 homers, 7 RBIs) and 3B Mark Hreben (.308, 7 RBIs); Biddeford pitchers Jon Dion (2-0, 5.40 earned-run average) and Jason Lariviere (1-0, 2.89 ERA in two appearances) and utility player Dave Foran (1-0 as a pitcher, .533 as a hitter with 5 RBIs); A&M Transmission CF Steve Oliver (.476, 8 runs, 7 RBIs); Fairfield 2B Matt Henrick (.538, 5 runs) and CF Mat Ward (.500, 4 runs); Brewer LF Jamie White (.667, 2 runs); New Auburn SS Mike Hayward (.545, 6 RBIs, 5 runs) and Augusta P-CF Brad Veilleux (.368).

Quinn definitely deserved his MVP honor.

Without him, his team would not have made it to the championship game. It’s as simple as that.

Skowhegan was the biggest group of overachievers in the tournament. They had also been overachievers during the regular season.
