As I drove home this gray Friday afternoon, the skies were ominous, threatening of storms to come. I switched on the radio in time to hear the summary of this week’s national news: George Bush’s redefinition of wetlands, resulting in the loss of thousands of acres of pristine territories throughout Maine and our nation, his condemnation of the Kansas governor’s support of people demonstrating to preserve reproductive freedom, our once again dashed hopes for the release of American hostages. How appropriate that our skies were so dark today.

Immediately this thought came to mind: Please, Mr. Bush, do something positive for this nation. Call upon the terrorist friends you surely made in the Iran-Contra scandal and the Holding of Hostages in Exchange for Winning the Election scandal, and bargain this time for the return of our hostages, right now.

And secondly, Mr. Bush, do something positive for the state of Maine. Find somewhere else to vacation; perhaps the beautiful shores of New Jersey would be more fitting for you. The morale of our state is far too low to endure any further association with your “kinder, gentler” policies.

And lastly, George, take our good governor with you. Karin E. Lifgren Orono
