I have declared open war against any future abusive use of my tax dollars. I am stating now that purchase of most taxable goods will be eliminated wherever possible. That new pick-up will remain in the dealer’s lot. Reason: sales tax.

Future upgrades on my wife’s cars will be eliminated and used cars will suffice. Reason: sales tax. Snack food is now history except when we are in other states, when we will stockpile. Reason: sales tax. Office equipment for my business will be purchased second-hand, private party, wherever possible. Reason: sales tax. Many taxable items or goods will now have to wait until I am traveling on business out-of-state. Reason: sales tax.

I want our legislators to know clearly that I may not be able to curb their extravagant and wasteful spending, but they will have to do it with a lot less of my tax dollars. I only hope others will think twice before purchasing high-priced items, thus allowing (the state) more tax dollars to work with.

I and my family will now boycott Orlando, Fla., Disneyland, Disneyworld, Epcot Center, and all items and goods relating to Disney Enterprises. Reason: hosting the National Conference of State Legislatures when so many states are in financial trouble. I also boycott United Airlines from all business or personal travel for reattaching the gate to the airplane when State Sen. Charles Pray showed up late for his plane to avoid the seven concerned taxpayers at Bangor International Airport. In all my business-related travel, I was never afforded the luxury of a plane redocking for me.

In a time of economic recession and increased taxes, all of these lawmakers showed a complete disregard for the taxpayer by making this trip. In industry, when there is a downturn in the economy, training and travel are always the first things to be cut. I and others have become more convinced as their employer (taxpayer and voter), that they as our elected officials, are not functioning on a level necessary to hold public office. Therefore, they should resign before they are voted out of office.

State lawmakers destroyed our family vacation plans by stalling over resolving our state’s budget and workers’ comp reform, and this has cost me $1,200. I, therefore, will continue to be a thorn in their sides until they resign or are voted out of public office. David C. Carlson Caribou
