CAHS takes win over Easton Bears

HS Soccer

MARS HILL – Kent Smith’s goal off a Hume Pierce assist 44 seconds into the first overtime period proved the difference as Central Aroostook High edged Easton 3-2 in schoolboy soccer action Monday.

The Panthers improved to 3-2. John Faggiole and Derek Townsend also scored goals for CAHS, with assists from Jacob Hansen and Chad King, respectively. King and Steve Boyd combined to make 10 saves on 12 shots in net.

For Easton, 1-2, Brad Wolverton scored unassisted. Chris DeMerchant scored on a penalty kick. Goalie Brad Winger recorded 33 saves, facing 45 shots.

Washburn 4, SAHS 3

At Dyer Brook, Andy Penland scored three goals and assisted on the game-winner, powering Washburn to its fifth win against one loss.

Penland fed Jay Moody at 11:39 of the second period to give the Beavers the lead for good. Jason Russell and Troy Pelkey assisted on two of Penland’s goals. The other was unassisted. Keeper John Walker made six saves, facing 10 shots.

For Southern Aroostook, 0-1, Aaron Bouchie, Jim Drew, and Adam Burpee scored the goals. Assists went to Kyle Fox and Drew. Goalie Brooks Skinner made eight saves on 26 shots.

Van Buren 3, Wisdom 0

At Van Buren, Kevin Morneault scored 2 goals to help pace the Van Buren Crusaders to the win over Wisdom of St. Agatha.

For the 3-0 Crusaders, Jason Poitras scored a goal on a direct kick. Josh Doucette made 2 assists. Troy Doucette notched his first shutout with 10 saves on 10 shots.

Jim Killarney made 14 saves on 19 shots for 2-3 Wisdom.

Fort Fairfield 3, Hodgdon 1

At Hodgdon, Kirk DeMerchant scored two goals and assisted on another leading the 1-2 Tigers to the victory.

DeMerchant assisted on a tally by Bobby Russell. In goal, Shawn Rogers made 8 saves on 11 shots.

For 0-2 Hodgdon, Mike Cain scored off a Jered Stewart assist. Stewart and Chris Quint combined to make 6 saves on 12 shots.

Limestone 8, Madawaska 0

At Limestone, Brian Ahearn and Tony Tobin each had 2 goals and an assist to lead the Limestone Eagles to their fourth win without a loss.

For Limestone, Nate Salat scored 2 goals. Chad Balance and Tyler Leighton each scored a goal. Chris Apodaca notched his second shutout by stopping all 15 shots he faced.

The Owls are now 0-3.

Girls Soccer

CAHS 1, Washburn 0

At Washburn, Jill Bradstreet scored the lone goal of the game unassisted 6:40 into the second half to give Central Aroostook of Mars Hill the win.

For the 5-0 CAHS Panthers, Duska Hewitt saved 9 of 10 shots.

Amy Lavway made 10 saves on 11 shots for 3-4 Washburn.

Hodgdon 5, Fort Fairfield 2

At Hodgdon, Kerri Ivey scored 2 unassisted goals to lead the Hodgdon Hawks to the victory.

Kerry Royal had a goal and 2 assists for the 2-2-1 Hawks. Lee-Ann Nesbitt and Danielle Peters each scored a goal. Vicki Larson stopped 10 of 12 shots.

For the 0-2-1 Tigers, Samantha Hayes and Theresa Prue each scored a goal. Sarah McCullough had an assist. Claudia Meents made 15 saves on 20 shots.

Madawaska 5, Limestone 1

At Limestone, Pat Pelletier scored one goal and assisted on another to key the Owls.

Debbie Jandreau, Suzelle Gagnon, Audrey Baker and Leslie Daigle scored one goal apiece for 2-1 Madawaska. Karen Libby assisted on two goals, while Kriste Arnold also had an assist.

Maria Sebastian and Keela Bretemps combined for 7 saves on 8 shots.

Amy Fountain scored an unassisted goal for 1-4 Limestone. Sonya Sager and Kim Chapman teamed to make 11 stops on 16 shots.
