14th annual Bangor Gun Show scheduled for Sept. 7-8

Whether you’re a hunter, a collector, a historian, or just plain curious, if your interest relates to firearms, the place to be is the 14th annual Bangor Gun Show.

The show, sponsored by Bangor Daily News Charities Inc., is scheduled for Sept. 7-8 at the Bangor Auditorium.

Whatever the inclination of the showgoer, someone will be there to buy or sell, offer advice or appraisal, and share conversation and expertise.

Among the wares will be new, used, modern, antique and collectable firearms, as well as hunting, shooting and reloading supplies.

Also available will be ammunition, cartridges, cast bullets, knives, shells, grips and clips, scopes and sights, militaria, custom cabinets, swords, books, and much more.

Of the 100 dealers and exhibitors who will fill the 250 tables, some are from Maine and elsewhere in New England, and some travel from as far as Canada and Kansas.

Many will be familiar to people who have attended past shows, but other dealers will be setting up there for the first time.

New this year is Paul Harrison. Two years ago, after 13 years in the retail gun business, Harrison started making guns for Smith & Wesson, Houlton. “People from Maine ought to know that these guns are made in Maine — not just the parts, but entirely. When they leave here, they’re in a box, ready to be sold,” he said.

Harrison’s display will simulate the process that produces .22 pistols, 40,000 in Houlton yearly. The company makes handcuffs as well, and another display will trace their manufacture, from the strips of steel to the finished product, and all the parts and processes in between.

Another newcomer is Dan Shea of Long Mountain Outfitters, Harmony, who supplies military and special operations firearms for military, museum, law enforcement and collector use.

Greg Bachley’s tables will offer a good fall browsing place for the hunter and shooter. The wide range of goods will include speed loaders, magazines, reloading supplies, high-quality, name-brand knives and Mag-Lite flashlights. Bachley, proprieter of D & G Outfitters, Ltd., Ringwood, N.J., is a first-time participant at the show..

A veteran of many shows, Norman Gelinas, Hampton, N.H., will bring the past to the present with a collection of Civil War artifacts, including carbines, revolvers and swords.

Other period items on display will be a knife sharpener dated 1865, a year’s diary kept by a New Hampshire soldier in 1864, three Civil War letters by New England soldiers, and a photo album featuring pictures of various Civil War soldiers, many of whom are identified.

The Bangor Gun Show will be open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 7, and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 8. Entry donation is $2.50, and children under 12 are admitted free with an adult.

All proceeds from the show are distributed to charities within the circulation area of the Bangor Daily News.
