A group of 21 cars from Winterport Dragway made a trip west last Friday night to try their cars against those of the Oxford Plains Dragway.
The results, says Winterport Dragway promotor Barry Norris, was quite impressive.
“We kicked them around a bit,” Norris said. “In fact, we had two of our cars in one of the finals of their Top Trophy class. It was a good showing.”
Tom Jenkins of Bradley and Craig Cousins of Carmel found themselves racing for the top spot in OPD’s Top Trophy division. In the end, Jenkins was the winner.
Joe Paluga of Bar Harbor, Winterport Dragway’s super eliminator winner on Sunday, finished second in Friday’s Top Eliminator division at Oxford Plains. Jerry Hatch of Lubec picked up a second place in the Street Eliminator while Norman Thompson of Jay picked up a third-place spot.
Winterport Dragway races every Sunday starting at 9:30 a.m. Last weekend, Norris reported, 131 cars were on hand. —
While a postrace technical inspection caused yet another controversy in the Speedway 95 pits, the track’s season point races are heating up.
Randy Smith of Cherryfield – winner of 13 Hobby class events this season – in closing in on Darin Bucknam of Addison for that division’s poBucknam still has a substantial 1,085-1,001 edge, however.
John Kalel of Orrington is in the catbird’s seat as far as the Sportsman drivers go. The 1990 defending points champion is in the top slot with 1,008 points. Gary Bellefleur of Stetson is second with 956 while Shawn Tucker – the lucky winner of last weekend’s race – is third with 954.
Ken Robinson of Machias has a 24-point edge over Alan Gardner of Whiting in the Super Street class. Robinson is up 1,048 to 1,024. Greg Bergeron of Milford is third at 997.
Due to the controversy in last weekend’s street stock race, the points and results were unavailable. As soon as the track makes them official, the NEWS will publish them. —
For those who missed it, Jimmy Burns of Winslow picked up his second Late Model Sportsman win at Unity Raceway.
Steve Nelson of Albion (Limited Sportsman), Bob Grady of Jefferson (Charger), Jeff Robinson of Vassalboro (Sport 4), and Bruce Shaw of Skowhegan (Street Stock) posted other victories. —
IN THE PITS – Another $1,000 will be up for grabs for the winner of this Sunday’s Sportsman feature at Speedway 95 in Hermon. Bomber race No. 5 will be held following the day’s 2 p.m. racing card…. Dan Beede of Barre, Vt., who grew up watching the Thunder Road Milk Bowl at his hometown track, won the American Canadian Tour event on Saturday edging out Junior Hanley of Campbelleville, Ontario. Dave Dion of Hudson, N.H., was third with Ralph Nason of Unity in fourth….
