NORTHEASTERN (1-0) vs. MAINE (0-1), 1 p.m., Alumni Field, Orono: Maine leads series 15-8 and has won 3 straight, including 42-7 at UM last year. Maine is celebrating 100th anniversary of program. NU has new coach in Barry Gallup and new look, switching from wishbone last year to one-back multiple offense. Key is NU junior QB Ralph Barone, who completed 12 of 21 throws for 303 yards in 35-10 win at Colgate last week. Key matchup: Barone vs. young Maine secondary which was burned badly in 48-7 loss to Villanova last week. Maine is starting five new players this week: QB Emilio Colon, LT John Hevesy, TE Shawn Campbell, SE Frizell Davis, and DE Craig Thibeau. OT Dan Jones (knee) remains sidelined.

On the Road….

MAINE MARITIME (0-0) vs. WESTFIELD STATE (0-0), 1 p.m., Bullens Field, Westfield, Mass.: Series is even at 2-2, WSU won last meeting in 1985. MMA is veteran team with 21 starters back from 5-4 squad in ’90, including junior TB Kirk Matthieu (1,428 yards in ’90). Mariners are deep and balanced behind senior QB Dave Robinson, WR John Guss, and defensive front led by LB Lance Stubinski. Westfield has 16 starters back from 3-7 team led by senior TB Jamie Shankle (886 yds in ’90). Owls can also throw behind junior QB Marc LeClair (91-213, 1,354 yds) and soph SE Tim Peters (33-439). Both teams run multiple offenses and are wide open. Injury report: none.
