ORONO – Robin Johnston scored two goals and assisted on another, lifting Harvard University to a 4-1 women’s soccer win over the University of Maine here Sunday afternoon.

With a 2-1 lead, the Crimson’s Johnston scored back-to-back second-half goals, blowing the game open for the 1-0 winners.

Laurie Uustal gave Harvard a 1-0 lead and Jen Minkus pushed the lead to 2-0 with an assist to Johnston.

Maine scored the first goal of the second half when Tiffany Mosher headed a Christina Contardo indirect kick into goal.

Johnston’s two goals followed, however, dropping Maine to 0-3 on the season.

For Harvard, goalkeeper Brook Donahoe had 6 saves on 8 shots.

Maine ‘keeper Nicole Ricci had 8 saves on 22 shots.

The Black Bears will next face Keene State in Orono on Sept. 21 at 3 p.m.

Westbrook in first-ever win

At Portland, the Westbrook College Wildcats collected their first-ever victory in women’s soccer on Sunday with a 2-1 win over Husson College of Bangor. On Saturday, Green Mountain College of Poultney, Vt., downed the Wildcats 6-0.

On Sunday, Lori Bouthillette’s direct kick in the second half gave the Wildcats the winning edge. Erin Barry scored Westbrook’s first goal off assists by Candace Madore and Becky Trott. Goalie Becka Myrick made 20 saves on 21 shots.

Kristi Carr scored Husson’s goal off an assist by Tina Lakeman. Netkeeper Wendy Schneider made 18 saves on 20 shots.

In Saturday’s game, Allison Hawk scored two goals to pace Green Mountain. Verna Clifford, Julie Davies, Kim Brown, and Jen Griffiths each added goals. Goalie Debbie Raber made 6 saves on 6 shots.

Westbrook goalie Myrick made 17 saves on 25 shots.

UMPI splits weekend games

The University of Maine-Presque Isle Owls came back to beat Lyndon State 2-0 on Sunday after losing to Castleton State on Saturday in double overtime 4-3.

On Sunday at Lyndonville, Vt., UMPI’s Jeannie Robinson scored off a direct kick and Jen Clark converted a Robinson pass. Goalie Robin Blackstone made 13 saves on 18 shots for the 2-2 winners.

Lyndon State netkeeper Cheryl Gadaper made 6 saves on 20 shots.

In Saturday’s game at Castleton, Vt., Michelle Devoe scored unassisted in the second overtime to give Castleton the victory.

Lynn Berube, Jen O’Toole, and Jen Carlson each scored goals for the 4-0 winners. Netkeeper Jackie Wait made 4 saves on 7 shots for the 4-0 winners.

Jen Clark scored a goal and assisted on another for the Owls. Wendy Romaneoli scored unassisted and Beth Corrow converted a Robinson setup. Goalie Blackstone made 26 saves on 30 shots.

Colby 1, Wheaton 0

At Norton, Mass., Alyssa Bensetter’s goal at the 7:56 mark of the first half gave Colby College of Waterville the victory on Saturday.

For the 2-0 Colby Mules, Meredith Johnson notched her second shutout with 9 saves on 9 shots. Brooke Porteus assisted on the goal.

Lynne Yanush saved eight of nine shots for 2-2 Wheaton.

St. Joe’s splits two

St. Joseph’s College collected a 2-1 overtime win over the University of Maine-Farmington on Saturday, but dropped a 5-0 verdict to Green Mountain College on Sunday in games at the Windham High School field.

In Sunday’s game, Brown scored two goals to pace Green Mountain. Griffiths, Clifford, and Sara Davis each added goals and netkeeper Raber made 8 saves on 15 shots.

For 2-1 St. Joe’s, goalie Karen Rogers made 13 saves on 27 shots.

In Saturday’s game, Kathy Britton scored the winning goal with 13:57 left in the second overtime off a Neile Joler assist for St. Joe’s. Joler scored the first goal on a pass from Britton. Goalie Rogers made 14 saves on 22 shots.

For 0-1 UMF, Alicia Plaisted made 6 saves on 24 shots.

Thomas 1, UNE 0

At Waterville, Sherri Sawyer scored off an assist by Krista Thompson with 10:14 left in the game to give the Thomas College Terriers the win over the University of New England.

Goalie Stacey Smith made 8 saves on 16 shots to help Thomas improve to 2-0.

For 0-2 UNE of Biddeford, Karen Bailey made 16 saves on 22 shots.
