The CBB teams started their 1991 seasons off with a win, a loss, and a tie highlighting Maine’s small college football action on Saturday.
Bowdoin College of Brunswick defeated Middlebury 27-22, Trinity College defeated Colby College of Waterville 10-6, and Bates College and Amherst College tied 26-26.
Bowdoin 27, Middlebury 22
At Middlebury, Vt., Chris Good threw his third touchdown pass to Peter Nye with 35 seconds left to give Bowdoin a 27-22 victory over Middlebury in the opener for both teams.
Middlebury, playing before a home crowd, had taken a 22-21 lead with 1:29 remaining when Eric Sevigney ran in from one yard. But a 2-point conversion failed.
Bowdoin led twice on an 80-yard pass play to Tom Muldoon to make the score 14-7 in the third. Good put Bowdoin ahead again with a 10-yard scoring pass to Mike Ricard in the fourth. His final 11-yard pass won the game.

Trinity 10, Colby 6
At Hartford, Conn., James Lane passed for 183 yards and a touchdown and Ted O’Connor kicked a 31-yard field goal as Trinity beat Colby 10-6.
Lane also had an 8-yard touchdown pass to Joe Brockmire called back because of illegal motion in the first quarter.
Colby scored in the third quarter when Rob Ward hit Steve Hatch with a 41-yard scoring pass.

Bates, Amherst tie
In Lewiston, Bates led by as much as 26-11 but had to settle for a tie against Amherst.
Matt Sawyer completed 24 of 42 passes for 273 yards and two touchdowns as Amherst came from behind for a 26-26 tie in the season opener.
Sawyer’s 9-yard pass to John Fitzgibbons and Peter Lewis’s point-after kick tied the game in the third quarter. Neither team was able to break the stalemate in the fourth quarter.
Jay Yuskis had a game-high 160 yards on 28 carries for Bates, including a 51-yard touchdown run. Steve Bucci threw touchdown passes of 71 and 35 yards to Chris Plante.
