INDIAN ISLAND – They were one of the top scoring lines in college hockey a year ago and they have picked up where they left off.

The line of Jim Montgomery between Brian Downey and Jean-Yves Roy combined for four goals and five assists on Saturday evening to lead the White team to an 8-4 win over the Blue team in the first of three Maine Blue-White hockey intrasquad games at the Sockalexis Memorial Ice Arena on Indian Island.

Roy had two goals and an assist while Montgomery and Downey had a goal and two assists apiece for the winners. Freshman defenseman Jim Burcar had a pair of goals with Devin Mintz and Matt McKerrow getting the others. McKerrow had an assist to go with his goal and defenseman Lee Saunders had two assists.

For the Blue team, Dave LaCouture had two goals with Cal Ingraham picking up a goal and an assist and Scott Pellerin scoring the other goal.

Mike Dunham had 12 saves on 15 shots; Garth Snow had 11 stops on 14 shots; Rob Howland kicked out 8 of 9 shots and Greg Hirsch had 6 saves on 11 shots.

“Offensively, things were about what I expected,” said Maine Coach Shawn Walsh. “We were very good offensively, but not very good as a team defensively. The score could have been higher.

“We were 5-for-9 on the power play which gives you an idea of the offensive talents we have,” added Walsh. “But we’ve got a long way to go defensively for the sixth straight year. We’ve got a ton of work to do.”

Walsh said the biggest surprise was the play of sophomore defenseman Saunders.

“He played very well,” said Walsh, who had three injured regulars on the sidelines in Mike Barkley (knee surgery), Martin Robitaille (ankle) and Randy Olson (groin).

The next Blue-White game will be Friday afternoon at 3:30 at the Sockalexis.
