VICTIMS OF MENTAL, POLITICAL, AND SPIRITUAL ADULTERY, by Al David Bernstein, Rel-Psych Inc., 434 pages, $20.

Writers are often asked, “What gave you the idea for this book?” In a sense this book is an answer, for in the process of exploration of the story of a Holocaust survivor, when he was stationed in Germany after World War II, the author developed two books: a novel and a study. In an unusual amalgam he has tied them together. One-half of “Victims” is a novel encompassing his heroine’s story, and the other half is a text or study course on psychology, religion and morality. The reader can choose which part to concentrate on.

The novel is poignant and potent. Ruth Schuller, a Christian, became a Holocaust victim. How she survived, mentally as much as physically, makes for strong reading.

The second part of the book provides a provocative winter’s project of study with supplements and outlines to guide one’s progress. Lest one wonder, the text is not difficult reading for the author has a lively sense of interest and fills in with many anecdotes. He speaks often of the personal Goliaths we all must face and of steps we can take to overcome them. It is a very human and thoughtful study, well worth the time it demands.

Al David Bernstein lives and works in Bangor. After three years of service in the Army he entered Boston University from which he received a bachelor of science degree in public relations. Writing has been his lifelong avocation. He has been working on a book which he calls Rel-Psych philosophy for many years, which is nearly completed.

Bernstein’s book is available at BookMarc’s and Betts Bookstore in Bangor, and at Mr. Paperback stores throughout the state.

Marion Flood French is a free-lance writer who resides in Bangor.
