Zimmerman keys UMaine victory

LEWISTON – Chip Zimmerman and Todd Sniper teamed up for three second-half goals to lift the University of Maine Black Bears to a 4-0 men’s soccer victory over the Bates College Bobcats in men’s soccer action here Wednesday.

Zimmerman tied a UMaine school record with most goals in a game and Sniper set a school record for most assists in a game.

Maine took a 1-0 first-half lead when Pat Laughlin scored off a Charlie Carroll pass. Zimmerman then scored three second-half goals, all off Sniper passes.

Goalie Seb D’Appolonia made 2 saves on 4 shots for the Black Bears, now 5-4-2.

For Bates, now 3-5-2, goalie Joel Smith made 9 saves on 24 shots.

UMFK 3, UMPI 2 (OT)

At Fort Kent, Yassin Hashi scored the game-winning goal 10:05 into overtime to give host University of Maine-Fort Kent an overtime victory over the University of Maine-Presque Isle.

For the 6-8-1 UMFK Bengals, David Lewis scored two goals to help pace the offense. John Matolla made two assists and Eric Hebert added one assist. Brian Fay was the goalie.

Todd Drinkwater and Kevin Hamel each scored a goal for the 7-6-1 Owls. Darren Collins, Bob Karcher, and Mark Keller each had an assist. Darren Allan was the goaltender.

Bowdoin 4, Colby 3

At Brunswick, Rob Kean had a goal and two assists to pace the host Polar Bears past Colby College of Waterville.

For the 5-5 Polar Bears, Matt Patterson, Derek Spence, and Greg Lennox each scored a goal. Andres DeLasa and Todd Trapnell combined to make 16 saves on 24 shots.

Ethan Spencer, Doug Oppenheimer, and Bill Lanagan each scored a goal for the 5-4 Mules. Chris Flint had an assist and Jim Condron made seven saves on 14 shots.
