Unchallenged incumbents win in Hampden

HAMPDEN — Unchallenged incumbent councilors William Romano, Donald Muth and Katherine Carter each will serve another term on the Town Council, according to voting results received early Wednesday morning.

Voters on Tuesday also elected to the council the well known Charles McClure as well as newcomer William Natalie.

On the SAD 22 board of directors, write-in candidates Jonathan Kunz and Cynthia Philbrick won three-year terms.

William Hanson won a seat on the Hampden Water District board of trustees.

Ballot counters here worked into Wednesday morning. Town Manager Marie Baker reported before midnight that an “excellent” turnout translated into more than 2,000 voters going to the polls. There are 4,600 registered voters at Hampden, according to Town Clerk Paula Newcomb.

In the race for the sole at-large council seat, McClure beat his opponent, Marshall Cary, 1,133 to 897. McClure, 71, will serve on the council one year, completing the two-year term vacated by Kenneth Huntley.

Unlike district seats, at-large seats represent the entire town. McClure had served on the council for nine years upon the expiration of his last term in November 1990.

In District 4, William Natalie beat his opponent, Barbara Norris, 367 to 274.
