WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – Williams College senior co-captain Heidi Sandreuter converted an overtime penalty stroke to give Williams a 2-1 victory over the University of Southern Maine in their ECAC Division III field hockey playoff quarterfinal game here Wednesday.
The teams were tied 1-1 after regulation time, 10 minutes of overtime and two periods of sudden-death overtime.
They went to penalty strokes and Sandreuter got the deciding goal after Williams’ Kelly Faucher and USM’s Anna Struck had swapped goals.
Cheryl Herman saved USM’s last penalty stroke to preserve Coach Chris Mason’s 100th win.
Alix Hyde had scored for Williams with 20 minutes left in regulation but Struck tied it five minutes later.
Herman finished with five saves for the 12-2 winners, who were seeded second. Kim Shaw made 15 saves for No. 7 USM, which finished at 11-6-3.
Williams is the defending ECAC champ.
