WM grid champs decided

Biddeford, Kennebunk and Jay won Western Maine schoolboy football championships Saturday in Classes A, B and C, respectively.

Biddeford notched a thrilling, 29-28 come-from-behind victory over archrival Thornton Academy of Saco to get the West Class A crown. Biddeford will play Pine Tree Conference champ Gardiner, a 20-19 victor over Mt. Blue of Farmington, Saturday at Bowdoin College in Brunswick.

In Class B, undefeated Kennebunk handled Mountain Valley of Rumford 24-7. Kennebunk meets LTC titlist Old Town, which blanked defending state champ Orono 6-0, Saturday at Winslow High School.

In the Class C state game, West champ Jay takes on LTC champion Stearns of East Millinocket. Jay downed Livermore Falls 21-12 Saturday and Stearns edged Maine Central Institute of Pittsfield 21-20 for the East title.

Biddeford 29, Thornton 28

At Saco, fullback Reuben Sevigny scored two touchdowns, including the final touchdown in the last minute of the game, to pull Biddeford within a point of Thornton (28-27).

Biddeford quarterback Chris Cote then hit Bob Guillerault with a two-point conversion pass to put Biddeford up for good. For the 8-3 Tigers, Sevigny scored the first TD on a 10-yard rush and cornerback Chris Wilson returned an interception 68 yards in the first quarter for the second TD.

The Tigers scored in the third quarter when Cote threw a three-yard TD pass to Grady Beaulieu.

For the 8-3 Golden Trojans, Art Leveris ran for 118 yards and three touchdowns on 16 carries. Quarterback Kirk Purvis hooked up with Doug Willett for a five-yard TD pass.

At Kennebunk, Derek Huff rushed for 101 yards and scored a third-quarter touchdown to help lead the Kennebunk Rams to the win.

For the 11-0 Rams, Jeff Seguin (57 yards) scored on a six-yard rush in the first quarter and Thanh Nguyen (73 yards) scored on a one-yard plunge.

For the 9-2 Falcons, Joe Bedard returned a kickoff 92 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter.

Jay 21, Livermore Falls 12

At Livermore Falls, Jason Hill passed for a touchdown and ran for another to lead Jay to the victory over the host Andies.

Todd Dumeny put the 7-3 Tigers on the board first with a 37-yard run in the second quarter. Scott Bessey then hauled in a three-yard TD strike from Hill later in the quarter. Hill capped the scoring with a 50-yard TD run in the third quarter.

For the 8-2 Andies, John Chretien returned a fumble 65 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter and Scott Hill rushed for a 50-yard TD in the final quarter to pull within nine points. But, the Tigers held on.
