LINCOLN — Lynne Haynes, a teacher at Mattanawcook Academy, was named outstanding physical educator by the University of Maine’s Division of Health, Physical Education and Recreation.

“She is very highly regarded by her colleagues across the state,” said Stephen A. Butterfield, associate professor and coordinator of UM’s health division.

“She has been characterized or described by many peers as intelligent, dedicated, hard-working, caring, fitness-minded and resourceful. These observations are backed up by Lynne’s many achievements.”

The award, established in 1987, recognizes outstanding achievement in the areas of health, physical education and recreation. Criteria for the award include a history of sustained excellence in one’s discipline, community service, and service to one’s profession.

Butterfield said Haynes’ work in physical management was impressive. Through that program, he said, Haynes had helped many children at Mattanawcook Academy achieve healthy, active lifestyles.

Butterfield said Haynes entered into a partnership with Dr. Robert Lehnhard and Dr. Holly Lehnhard of the University of Maine and devised a program called “Fit For Life.” He said the program would be used as a blueprint for school physical fitness programs throughout the state.

Butterfield commended Haynes, saying she was the “epitome of excellence in physical education. “Lynne Haynes represents a school system and community that value the total development of all its children and youth.”
