Downeast Classic SOUTH CAROLINA vs. LOUISVILLE
Time, site: Friday, 7:15 p.m., Bangor Auditorium
Records: South Carolina, 0-0; Louisville, 0-0
Key players: South Carolina (last year’s stats) – G Nicki Bass (4.8 ppg), F Christi Timmons (frosh, 5-10), C Marsha Williams (16.3 ppg, 6.5 rpg), F Wendy Moss (2.1 ppg), F Treka McMillan (2.8 ppg, 6.5 rpg); Louisville – G Tuonisia Turner (8.9 ppg, 5.1 apg), G Renee Huntsinger (7.2 ppg, 3.8 apg), F Nell Knox (13 ppg, 5.6 rpg), F Gwen Doyle (17.9 ppg, 8.5 rpg), C Kelly Rose (8.3 ppg, 5.8 rpg)
Outlook: South Carolina leads the series 16-3 and will try for its 17th victory behind the strong inside play of Williams, a player who the Cardinals have been unable to stop. Louisville may benefit from better offensive balance and a more experienced backcourt. The Cardinals will use their overall team quickness to pressure the Gamecocks and will try to force an up-tempo game. The Gamecocks will need some accurate outside shooting from Bass so the Cardinals can not cheat down inside to stop Williams.
WISCONSIN-GREEN BAY vs. MAINE
Time, site: Friday, 9:15 p.m., Bangor Auditorium
Records: Wisconsin-Green Bay, 1-1; Maine 0-1
Key players: Wisconsin-Green Bay – G/F Sandra Baerwald (7 ppg, 5 rpg), G Sue Geiser (4 ppg, 5 apg), F/C Dawn Schirmacher (7 ppg, 8 rpg), G Mariann Van Den Elzen (9.5 ppg, 5 rpg, 4 apg), C Lisa Wegner (16.5 ppg, 11 rpg); Maine – G Carrie Goodue (24 ppg), G Chris Strong (5 ppg), G Julie Bradstreet (4 ppg), C Cyndi Buetow (12 ppg, 7 rpg), F Tracy Frenette (12 ppg, 4 rpg)
Outlook: Two teams with similar styles will clash. Both like to push the ball up the court and play aggressive man-to-man defense. The Bears will have to box out well as Green Bay grabbed 20 offensive rebounds when it upset No. 8 Georgia. Both teams have good offensive balance, but Green Bay will need a consistent performance out of Wegner, while the Bears will look for the same out of seniors Frenette, Goodhue, and Bradstreet. Depth may be an issue for both teams in the two-day tourney as each relied on seven to eight players in their first games.
