Barnerssoi wins giant slalom; Rob Parisien 3rd

CARRABASSETT VALLEY – Germany’s Tobias Barnerssoi withstood icy conditions and gusting winds Wednesday at Sugarloaf/USA to win a North American Championship Series giant slalom when runnerup Casey Puckett fell slightly on his second run.

Barnerssoi, the first-run winner, had a total time of 1 minute, 59.32 seconds. Puckett was second among the 48 skiers in 1:59.99 and Rob Parisien, who had the fastest second run, was third at 2:00.13.

“I had a really good first run,” Puckett said, “but I fell on my side at one gate in the second run, slid a little bit, and that cost me.

“It was icy and I just lost my concentration. I lost a lot of speed and by the time I got going again, I couldn’t beat him.”

Doug Williams, the U.S. coach, said, “It was a good race for Casey and a real confidence-builder for Rob. He skied very well, especially on that second run.”

The NorAm series moves to LeRelais, Quebec, for slaloms on Friday and Saturday, moves to New Hampshire’s Attitash Ski Area Monday and Tuesday, and completes its eastern races next Wednesday with a super-G at Sugarloaf.
