An Orland man was injured in one of several fires in Hancock County Friday afternoon and evening which were fought in frigid weather conditions.

Roland Robinson was injured when a fire began in his 2 1/2-story frame house at the corner of Route 1 and the Back Ridge Road in Orland.

According to Orland Fire Chief John Barlow, Robinson received some burns and was taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center by ambulance Friday evening. Robinson was treated at the hospital and released Friday night.

The fire, which was confined to the attached ell on the Robinson house, caused extensive smoke and heat damage throughout the structure. Firefighters from Orland, Bucksport, Ellsworth, Penobscot and Castine responded to the scene at 6 p.m.

The fire was brought under control within the hour, with three additional hours needed to extinguish the blaze.

Barlow said that the cause of the fire was under investigation, although he believed it had started near a wood stove. A family dog was lost in the fire.

Firefighters from the Penobscot Fire Department were called in to battle two chimney fires in Orland while that town’s department handled the structure fire.

The first chimney fire was reported at 6:48 p.m. at the Sargent residence on Castine Road. The second, reported at 9 p.m., was in the education building at H.O.M.E. Inc. on Route 1, directly across from the Orland Fire Department.

Earlier Friday afternoon, a mobile home on the North Sullivan Road in Sullivan was destroyed by fire.

Sullivan Fire Chief Frank Dedmon said that the trailer, owned by David Carney, was in flames when firefighters from both Sullivan and Sorrento arrived at the scene at about 4:30 p.m.

No one was at home at the time of the fire, but Carney had been at the trailer about 30 minutes before the blaze began.

Dedmon said that the trailer had some type of heating unit, possibly kerosene, which he believes may have been located in the living room. That room, he said, was where the fire seemed the hottest.

The fire chief said he planned to return to the site Saturday morning to attempt to pinpoint the cause of the fire.
