MILLINOCKET — The School Board voted Wednesday to ratify a contract with the Millinocket Education Association.
The new one-year contract is retroactive to Sept. 1 and will expire Aug. 31, 1992. The previous contract expired Aug. 31. The association represents about 115 people.
The contract provides a 2 percent retroactive pay increase. Superintendent Georgia Carroll said the new contract had some language changes. She said health insurance would continue to be 100 percent paid for by the school department.
A Millinocket teacher on Step 1 with a bachelor’s degree earned $18,885 under the old contract and now will earn $19,425. A teacher at the top of the 15-step pay scale with a bachelor’s degree earned $31,275 under the old contract and under the new contract will earn $32,025. Carroll said teachers with a master’s degree had earned an additional $440, an additional $880 for a certificate of advanced study or a Ph.D. Under the new contract, they will earn an additional $500 and an additional $1,000 for a CAS or a Ph.D.
The board approved the nomination of Theresa Scarano as director of special services, which includes all special education services and federal projects.
Scarano, who has extensive experience in special education, has been working for the Millinocket School Department for four years as special-education coordinator. Before working for Millinocket schools, she served SAD 70 as director of special education, and from 1981 to 1987 she was director of special programs (federal projects).
Carroll said the position of director of school services, formerly held by Brent Colbry, had been revamped.
She said that, at this time, Scarano’s former position would not be filled, and that she was not sure whether she would recomend it be filled later because the school department was trying to “downsize if we can without impairing the quality of education.”
The superintendent said the board decided to continue using a permanent substitute, Carolyn Gross, for a position at the middle school to fill the post of Sheila Haines, who retired earlier.
The nomination of Mary K. Osgood was approved as an afternoon educational technician (teacher aide) to work with a special-needs students about three hours daily. Carroll said Osgood serves as a morning kindergarten teacher.
The board approved the nomination of A.J. Walker as head ski coach.
