MAINE vs. ST. PETER’S

Time, site: Saturday, 1 p.m., Cumberland County Civic Center, Portland.

Records: Maine 2-5; St. Peter’s 3-2.

Series: Maine leads series 1-0 with a 60-57 win last year.

Key players: Maine – F Heather Briggs (15.3 ppg, 9.9 rpg), G Carrie Goodhue (11.6 ppg), F Jess Carpenter (10.0 ppg), F Tracey Frenette (10.0 ppg, 6.0 rpg), G Julie Bradstreet (9.4 ppg, 3.7 apg, 4.0 spg); St. Peter’s – G Joann Blasamo (11.6 ppg), F Nadine Davis (10.4 ppg, 7.8 rpg), F Stacia Hines (7.8 ppg, 6.8 rpg), G Michelle Condit (8.4 ppg), F Regeen Ryan (7.2 ppg, 5.6 rpg).

Outlook: Last year, the Black Bears, then 2-5, won a tournament at St. Peter’s College – including a win over the Peahens in the title game – kicking off an eight win, no loss stretch. This year, the Black Bears, again 2-5, will look to start another run. Peahens lost two starters from last year’s team, but were picked to win the their conference, the Metro Atlantic. Also in the MAC is Fairfield University, a team which beat Maine earlier this season. Coach Trish Roberts’ Black Bears will look to the inside game to help balance out its offense. Maine is still without sophomore point guard Chris Strong (knee injury). Black Bears will not play again for 15 days (Dec. 29 vs. James Madison).
