Hurricanes compete in Classic

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Members of the Hurricane Swim Club did well at the Christmas Classic swim meet here at Brown University Saturday and Sunday.

Twenty-seven teams from seven states competed in the meet. Teams from Maine, Massachusetts, New York, New Hampshire, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Florida.

In the ages 10-under age division, Becky McLeod finished 14th in the 100 individual medley and 16th in the 100 butterfly, 200 free, and 100 free. Kim Rice was 14th in the 100 breaststroke. In the boys division, Pat Rice was 13th in the 100 butterfly, and 16th in the 50 backstroke, 200 free, and 100 backstroke.

In the 11-12 girls class, Heather Babcock finished fifth in the 50 free (27.24 team record), and sixth in the 100, 200, and 500 free. The 200 medley relay team of Jen Bond, Susan Price, Liz Downey, and Babcock finished sixth.

In the 13-14 girls class, Cara Malerba was second in the 100 breaststroke and ninth in the 200 breaststroke (2:36.14 team record). Heather McLeod was 10th in the 1,650 free. For the boys, Jason Williams was third in the 100 breaststroke and fourth in the 200 breaststroke. Chris Falk was 12th in the 200 backstroke.

Black Bear Invitational held

ORONO – Five teams competed in the Black Bear Invitational swim meet here at the University of Maine’s Wallace Pool Sunday. Old Town, Mount Desert Island, Auburn-Lewiston, and Belfast each sent teams.

For the Hurricane Swim Club of Bangor, Sabattus O’Connell won the 25- and 50-meter breaststrokes, 25 and 50 butterfly (49.38 team record), 25 breaststroke (49.38), and 100 freestyle.

In the 9-10 girls division, Beth Boone won the 50 backstroke and Brit Whitney won the 100 butterfly. In boys 9-10, Aaron Parcak won the 100 free, and 50 and 100 butterfly (1:26.62 team record). Dan Soucie won the 50 breaststroke.

In the 11-12 boys division, Jon McLeod won the 50 backstroke in the boys 11-12 class.

In the 13-14 division, Carolyn Tourtillotte won the girls 50 butterfly (28.76 team record) and 200 butterfly. Dan Reid won the boys 50 and 200 breaststrokes.

In the senior boys division, Brian Long won the 200 backstroke. Aimee Soucie won both the 50 and 200 breaststrokes.
