Indians top Riots for sixth straight

OLD TOWN – Matt Arsenault scored 32 points and added five steals and five assists to lead the undefeated Old Town Indians past Orono 68-45 in schoolboy basketball action here Thursday night.

The 6-0 Indians also got a solid effort from Scott Springer with 16 points and eight rebounds. The hosts fell behind early, trailing 11-8 after a period, but rallied to take control in the second period.

Old Town played without Steve Pooler, who is sidelined for 4-6 weeks with a broken thumb.

Orono, 5-4, was led by Jay Vetelino’s 10 points. Jamie Beaudoin scored nine.

Central outscored Lee 24-8 in the fourth quarter. Central upped its record to 7-1 and Lee slipped to 6-3.

Paul Speed paced the winners with 18 points. David Green and John Allen each chipped in with 15 points.

For Lee, Steve Coombs scored 17 points and John King added 12.

At Danforth, the Bangor Christian Patriots took a four-point lead late in the game and held off the Vikings in the final minute to take the win.

Mark Jamison and Clint Jackson each scored 19 points for the winners, now 3-6. Jamison nailed four 3-pointers.

For the Vikings, now 0-9, Roger Dow and Russell Young each put in 16 points.

At Deer Isle, the host Deer Isle-Stonington Mariners broke open the game in the second half when they outscored the Vikings 51-15 to take the victory.

Jon Haskell sparked the 7-1 winners in the third quarter when he scored 16 of his 18 points. Aaron Eaton came on strong in the fourth when he canned 11 of his 13 points.

David Joyce added a game-high 19 points for the Mariners.

Mel Grant scored 12 points for the 3-8 Vikings and Jason Krienke netted 11.
