I read with interest the editorial in the February issue of Down East magazine about limitation of terms for legislators which was reprinted from your newspaper. It reminded me of a discussion I had with my father over the holidays. A Milo native, he has since lived in quite a number of states and currently resides in Annapolis, Md.
The people of that state have settled on another solution to the problem. Since most of the actual work always seems to get accomplished in the last month or so of the session, they have limited the legislative sessions to about three months out of the year. This should allow the legislators to be involved with their constituencies for the majority of the year — living and working among them, understanding the problems they face through first-hand experience. And in an era of budget deficits, legislators would no longer require “full-time” salaries. Suzanne Hamlin Somerville, Mass.
