MADAWASKA — Three Madawaska Boy Scouts — Michael Dechaine, Christopher Farnham and John Young — received the Eagle rank in ceremonies Sunday at Madawaska.
Several Scout officials from Madawaska to Brewer were involved in the ceremonies attended by about 60 friends and relatives of the honorees.
Farnham, a senior at Madawaska High School, supervised the construction of bleachers for Madawaska High School’s outdoor sports area for his Eagle service project.
In Scouting, Farnham also is a member of the Order of the Arrow. He has been in the Boy Scout program since September 1986. He has worked at the Boy Scout Reservation, Camp Roosevelt, for three summers and is a member of his troop’s Venture Patrol.
In school, he is a member of the ski team, cross-country team, track program and chess club. He is a member of MEGA, Madawaska’s Efforts for Gifted Adolescents.
In the community, he is a member of TLC, a group promoting a drug-free community, holds a brown belt in Tae Kwon Do and is a member of St. Paul’s United Church at Edmundston, New Brunswick. He has earned the God and Country Medal, the religious award of his faith. He also is a member of the American Legion’s firing squad and is a certified scuba diver.
He plans to attend college in the fall and major in English. He is the son of John and Judith Foster and Curvin and Charlene Farnham.
Dechaine is a junior at Madawaska. His community service project was the planning and restoration of a stone foundation under a one-room school owned by the Madawaska Historical Society. The school, which is the oldest still intact in the St. John Valley, was built in 1871. He also worked on a nature trail used by area youngsters for outdoor studies.
In his community, Dechaine attained a green belt in Tae Kwon Do, is an altar server at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, and has been a lifeguard at both the Edmundston, New Brunswick, and Madawaska swimming pools.
In school, he has maintained a 3.2 point average and has received awards in social sciences and in science. He has received letters for participation in golf and band and also has participated in baseball and basketball.
He is a member of the Order of the Arrow in Scouting. He is the son of Joel and Micheline Dechaine.
Young is a sophomore at Madawaska High School. His community service project involved planting trees at the St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church cemetery.
At school, Young participates in band, basketball and wrestling. He has letters in wrestling and hopes to become a state wrestling champion.
He is also a member of the St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church. He attained the catholic Ad Altere Dei religious award and is a member of the Order of the Arrow.
His future plans include college and a career in law enforcement. He is the son of John and Hilda Young.
All three Boy Scouts acquired more than 21 merit badges in their years in the Scouting program. All served in many leadership positions in their troop through the years. Their scoutmaster is Wallace Bouchard.
