EAST CORINTH – Sue Ann Allen celebrated her birthday Friday night by firing in 24 points to lead Central High School past rival Mattanawcook of Lincoln 63-47 in a schoolgirl basketball regular-season finale.

The win avenged an earlier Mattanawcook Academy win over the Red Devils at Lincoln.

Central finished at 14-4 and the Lynx 13-5 in the battle of Class C tourney-bound squads.

Beth Miller had a big night for the Devils as well, scoring 18 and grabbing 12 rebounds. Cherie Greatorex scored 11 points and Laura Hatch had 10 rebounds.

For the Lynx, Kim Bennett scored 17, and April Lyons 10.

Hornets nip East Grand

ASHLAND – Holly Carney’s 3-pointer with 18 seconds left in the game gave the Ashland Hornets a 55-54 schoolgirl basketball victory over East Grand of Danforth here Friday.

East Grand put up a shot at the close of the game, but it missed the mark and also came after the buzzer sounded.

For the 12-6 Hornets, Carney finished with 23 points – 21 in the second half – and hit five of six 3-pointers. Diana Belskis finished with 12 points despite fouling out with 2:30 left. Hope Carney also scored 12.

Shelly Page scored 22 points for the 12-6 Vikings. Michelle Frye had 20 points.
