PCHS tips Eagles in prelim

GUILFORD – Rachel Cookson scored a game-high 21 points to lead the host Piscataquis Pirates to a 62-50 Class C schoolgirl basketball preliminary victory over Limestone here Wednesday.

Elisa Thompson scored 14 points for the 10-9 Pirates, who enter the tournament as the No. 8 seed.

Piscataquis will play No. 1 Schenck of East Millinocket Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m. at the Bangor Auditorium.

For the 11-8 Eagles, Kim Chatman scored 14 points and Rachel Sharts had 13. Jenny Allen and Becky Rhome each scored 10.

Old Town 53, Nokomis 46

At Old Town, Heather Brewer scored five points in overtime, after hitting the game-tying shot with five seconds left in regulation, as the Old Town Indians defeated the Nokomis Warriors 53-46 in a Class A game at MacKenzie Gym Wednesday night.

The win moved the host Indians to 11-4 on the season while the Warriors of Newport fell to 6-9.

Brewer’s 19-footer from the top of the key with five seconds left in regulation tied the game at 40-40. She then scored five of her team’s 13 points in the extra period to give Old Town the win.

Brewer and Steph Smith finished with 16 points each for the winners. Smith also grabbed 12 rebound while Betsy McLaughlin picked off 10 missed shots.

For Nokomis, Laura Grumbach had 13 points and Angie Wilber had 10.
