Once again, the premeet signs point to a Bangor-Cape Elizabeth duel Monday for the girls Class A high school swimming and diving championships at Bowdoin College in Brunswick.
Trials are scheduled for 10 a.m. with the finals set for 5 p.m.
Coach Jim Willis’ Rams, the 1991-92 Penobscot Valley Conference champion, display their customary frontline power and depth by claiming six top seeds while placing 22 competitors in premeet scoring position.
Bangor holds the top spot in all three relay events (200 medley, 200 and 400 free), as well as the diving with Maine’s premier performer, Jessie Sexton. Junior Amy Walls holds the first slot in the 50 free while Ram teammate Ellie Edson is the top seed in the 100 butterfly.
Cape Elizabeth, guided by first-year coach Bill Pullis, is ready to lock horns with the Rams with strength in the sprint freestyle (Burnadette Sweeney) and the stroke events where the Capers claim the top seed in the 100 backstroke (Krystian Hadam).
Cape follows Bangor with three very close second-place seeds in the relays.
Highlighting the individual event races will be the speedy swimming of freshman Kirsten Nagle of Traip Academy in Kittery. Nagle’s seed time in the 200 free (1:56.4) reflects a state record achieved a week ago and her entry time in the 500 free (5:16.0) is 10ths of a second away from a record swim.
Meanwhile, at the University of Maine Wallace Pool in Old Town, the Old Town Indians and the Mount Desert Island Trojans appear to be the frontrunners for the state Class B title.
Trials will begin at 10 a.m. with finals scheduled for 5 p.m.
Coach John Mountford’s Trojans claim the top seeds in seven of the eight individual swimming events, as well as all three relays.
Senior Gillan Beamer is the top seed for MDI in the 200 IM and the 100 breaststroke while senior classmate Erin Fisher holds the top spot in the 50 free and the 100 butterfly.
Trojan freshman Melanie Tripp is the first seed in the 200 and 500 free events.
Old Town, with second seeds in all the relays, will challenge the powerful MDI frontline with quality depth.
Coach Doug Springer’s Indians are led by underclassmen Heather Clement (200 IM, 100 butterfly), Shannon Smith (200 IM, 100 back) and Trina Smith (200 IM, 100 back).
