Following last year’s restructuring of the Maine Secondary School Principals’ Association State Individual Gymnastics Championship, some confusion remained as to the correct method of reporting the results of that event.

Kathy Walley of Camden-Rockport, director of the championship, indicated Monday afternoon that, while the most prestigious portion of the competition is the All-Class event in which the top five gymnasts from each class compete for state titles in vault, beam, floor exercise, bars and all-around, awards are also made to individuals in Classes A and B.

At the conclusion of the preliminary competition, which takes place in the morning and the afternoon, state championship medals are awarded to the winners of each event in both Class A and Class B, Walley said.

“It’s really three meets in one, with a Class A and Class B meet running simultaneously,” she said, “followed by the prestigious All-Class meet.

“It used to be that ribbons went to the 11-through-20 finishers, who were all lumped together. But we did away with those (following the 1990 competition) and, instead, decided to give medals to the top eight finishers in Class A and Class B, and then to have an All-Class championship.”
