BELFAST — A full slate of candidates have filed papers for the Monday, March 9, mayoral, city council and school board elections.
City Clerk Teresa Crosby said that challengers have signed on in each of the wards where an incumbent city councilor is running for re-election. In addition, incumbent Mayor Page Worth will have two challengers. The council and mayor serve two-year terms.
In the race for seats on the SAD 34 board of directors, six candidates are vying for four vacant four-year seats. Two candidates filed nomination papers to fill two unexpired terms that opened when members resigned because they left the area. Each of those seats had two years remaining.
The candidates are:
Mayor; Page Worth, Richard Eaton and Jan Anderson.
Councilor, Ward 1; Margaret Temple is unopposed.
Councilor, Ward 2; incumbent Kip Brundage, Lawrence Gleeson and Richard McGray.
Councilor, Ward 3; incumbent Stephen Swayze and Kevin Page.
Councilor, Ward 4; Winston York and Lawrence Moses.
Councilor, Ward 5; incumbent James Roberts and Lewis Baker.
Although council candidtes must reside in the ward they campaign to represent, each candidate competes citywide and is not required to poll a majority in their home ward to be elected.
School board, four-year term; Allen Weaver, Ricki LeSan, Richard Ferris, Phillip Carthage, John Gallagher and Douglas Leavell.
School board, unexpired two-year terms; David Caswell and Eleanor Goddard Daniels.
City Clerk Crosby said that the polls would open at 9 a.m. and close at 8 p.m. on Election Day. Polling will be in the following locations: Ward 1, Pierce School; Ward 2, Crosby Junior High; Ward 3, City Hall; Ward 4, Belfast Area High School; Ward 5, East Belfast School.
