BATON ROUGE, La. – The University of Maine Black Bears opened their baseball season with their bats in midseason form with a 12-5 victory over defending national champ LSU at Alex Box Stadium here Friday night.

The Bears cranked out 12 hits with home runs by Shanan Knox and Shawn Tobin to back winning pitcher Mike D’Andrea. The senior righthander struck out four batters while walking six and giving up six hits in five innings.

Ronnie Hews pitched the final four innings for Maine as he struck out four while walking four and giving up four hits.

The 1-0 Bears play 7-2 LSU again on Saturday and Sunday. LSU The 1-0 Bears play 7-2 LSU again on Saturday and Sunday. LSU has been ranked 10th and 12th in national polls this season.

Gabe Duross added three hits to the Maine attack and Tim Scott had two. Both players doubled with Duross driving in two runs and Scott one.

Glen Stupienski and Steve Puleo each added two hits for the Bears and both drove in two runs.

The Bears chased LSU lefty Ronnie Rants (1-2) in the first inning as they struck for eight runs. They added two more runs in the second, another in the third, and one more in the ninth.
