Handbell ensemble coming to Bangor

The Concert Handbell Ringers of Wheeler School in Providence, R.I., will present a public concert at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 11, at Grace United Methodist Church, 193 Union St., Bangor. For the second year in a row, the Concert Handbell Ringers will open their spring tour in Bangor. The tour will continue in eastern Canada.

The group is in its 12th season of performing concerts and workshops for churches, schools and civic organizations throughout New England, Canada, New York and Ohio. The ringers have appeared on local television and have recorded with the Empire Brass Quintet on “Joy to the World,” and with folk artist Ed Sweeney on “Inside Fezziwig’s.”

The ensemble recently performed with the Rhode Island Philharmonic Orchestra. The 11 ringers are accepted by audition into a full-credit course known as Performance Handbells, which meets daily for rehearsal and study to prepare for more than 25 concerts annually.

Daniel K. Moore, director, is chairman of the department of performing arts at Wheeler School. He frequently serves as clinician and massed director at local, regional and national handbell festivals, and is the former Liaison for Handbells in Education to the national board of the American Guild of English Handbell Ringers.

He is co-author of “Handbells in Education — A Guide to Learning,” and chairman-elect of Area I, AGEHR. He also is an editor of the Area I newsletter, Fundamental Tone.

The concert ringers perform on a five-octave set of English handbells manufactured by Malmark Inc. in Plumsteadville, Pa.

All are welcome. A freewill offering will be accepted.
