Witches sweep Braves

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Salem State University of Salem, Mass., swept a pair of baseball games from Husson College of Bangor here Wednesday with a 7-2 victory in game one and a 4-1 win in the second game.

In the opener, Alan Stapleton (1-0) entered the game in relief in the fourth inning and allowed two hits and one run to notch the win for 3-0 Salem State. Jack Dupuis hit a two-run homer in the fifth, and Kevin Abernathy singled twice and drove in a run to pace the offense.

For the 3-7 Braves, Ron Goddard (0-2) pitched five innings in the losing effort.

In the second game, Salem State’s Steve Howard (1-0) held Husson to one hit in five innings to earn the victory. Steve Frank had two singles and a double to help pace the Witches to the win over Husson. Roger Hyland singled twice.

For the Braves, Ron Mayo doubled, and hit a solo homer in the fourth inning to pace the offensive effort. Jamie White (1-2) took the loss on the mound.
