Brewer Auction Rooms is no more

The last of a conglomeration of old, red buildings which used to comprise the Brewer Auction Rooms at 9 South Main St. is now a pile of debris.

In its place may rise a yacht club, or a botanical garden, or something else compatible with the riverside site, according to owner Donald LaGrange of Brewer.

But just what happens will depend greatly on the economy and the Department of Environmental Protection, to say nothing of the Army Corps of Engineers, LaGrange said.

The owner of Harborside Restaurant said he hopes to have docks in the river at the site by this summer, pending approval by the necessary boards. As for the site of the building, it will be landscaped for the time being.

LaGrange said he envisions the dock space being available for boaters who want to stop in for a meal and possibly stay overnight. But there are no plans for long-term dock space rental. That, he said, will be left to dock owners and operators on the Bangor shore.

The new Harborside Restaurant sits on the site of one of the former Brewer Auction Rooms furniture annexes. The old Harborside, a former filling station building which sits close to South Main Street, may be razed in the future, LaGrange said.
