Bangor’s Chip Carson continued his bid for a second state championship with a strong showing in the Maine Open Candlepin Bowling Association tourney at the Bangor-Brewer Lanes in Brewer over the weekend.

Carson, who won his first state title in 1987, rolled up a 10-string total of 1,365 in Sunday’s semifinal round to beat Westbrook’s Ron Keniston, who recorded a 1,268.

Carson jumped out to an early lead when he clicked off 10 straight marks in his second string, finishing with a 186.

Defending state champ Russ Nealey of South Paris will meet Carson in next Saturday’s final at 1 p.m. at the B-B Lanes.

Nealey advanced through Sunday’s semifinal round by edging Matt Rich of South Paris 1,238 to 1,207.

Sharon Fogg of South Paris, the defending women’s state champ, also earned a chance at her second straight title as she defeated Paula Truman of Saco in their semifinal 1,241 to 1,186.

Fogg will take on Karen Matero of South Paris in next Saturday’s women final at the B-B Lanes at 11 a.m.

Matero advanced to the final after beating Judie Barry of Sanford in the tourney’s closest semifinal 1,110 to 1,104.

The results of the men’s quarterfinal matches on Saturday were: Keniston defeated Mark Smith, South Paris, 1,199 to 1,098; Carson stopped Mike Leland, South Paris, 1,259 to 1,191; Nealey downed George Merrill, Westbrook, 1,306 to 1,290; and Rich edged Allyn Joy, South Paris, 1,408 to 1,340.

The women’s quarterfinal results were: Matero beat Val Joy, South Paris, 1,165 to 1,154; Barry defeated Lisa Dube, Saco, 1,158 to 1,073; Truman downed Rene Nappi, Saco, 1,101 to 1,033; and Fogg stopped Sue Crawford, Bangor, 1,235 to 1,116.
